If you enjoy standing next to a virtual body of water and praying that you’ve chosen the right worm to tempt the creatures that inhabit it into taking a bite, then No Man’s Sky’s latest update is definitely for you. It’s called Aquarius, and it’s launching today, September 4th, and it’s about catching alien fish through a series of new mechanics.
Following the very popular first part of the world update, Hello Games has been inspired by some Reddit fan art to give people a chance to embrace their inner angler.

As mentioned in the patch notes and trailer below, Aquarius adds fishing functionality to the game via a new system that allows players to “explore the universe, find the perfect waterside spot, jump with the fish – sit back and relax on your own , pondering your own thoughts, or looking at the alien vistas with your traveling companions, waiting for a bite of delicious food.
A bit like Dredge, but with alien specimens instead of Lovecraftian aberrations, you can catch a variety of fish and catalog them all in your fishing logs All have “their own habitats and catching conditions.”
In addition to your desired fishing rods, you can also invest in a number of equipment that will be useful for your fishing activities, such as fish pots that can “catch rare catches” and personal fishing platforms that can be used for fishing. Or set in the middle of the pond instead of just anchored to the edges. That’s okay, we’ll pretend you haven’t invested in a bit of float metal so you can be antisocial.
In addition to filling out your log while fishing, you also have the chance to win some trophies, equipment, and cook something through new recipes. Plus, there’s a new expedition mission that encourages you to get out and grab some items that you might need to tie to the top of your boat and haul home.
