Now that we’ve had time to digest the heartbreaking cancellation news, we’re going to focus on what we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends.
Every member of the Regan family deserves a strong summary.
When the final credits roll, nothing should be left hanging, and the series finale should feel like a finale.
The writers of “Blue Bloods” have always prided themselves on avoiding soap opera-like nonsense, so they may offer new cases and political issues before the final episode.
Still, if the final family dinner goes the way we hope and expect, it will be a tearjerker.
‘Blue Bloods’ hints at next chapter for Reagan’s family
Even if a spin-off never happens, the Reagan family should expand
After spending fourteen years with the Regan family, it would be cold comfort to know they had a good ending, but it was better than nothing.
It would help soften the blow if the ending was the end of this chapter of their family’s history, rather than the end of everything for good.
If there is a Blue Bloods spinoff, the series finale might help.
Still, one thing we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that we get a real sense of each member entering a new phase in their lives, even if that won’t be shared with the audience.
We’re always going to be heartbroken by how this series ends, but it would help if it at least had a satisfying ending.
Frank resigns as commissioner
It would be nice to clear the way for the next Reagan
It only makes sense for the series to end if Frank retires.
No matter what the mayor or his dream team thinks, his determination to be a man of integrity, coupled with the fact that two of his children are police officers, has always been at the heart of Blue Bloods.
Additionally, Frank’s retirement would close this chapter of his life and open a new chapter for the next police chief, especially if it’s someone else from the Regan family.
Commissioner Perfect has several options to replace Frank at the end of Blue Bloods.
If another Regan becomes the commissioner, Jamie would make the most sense since he’s mostly level-headed and does what he thinks is right.
However, the Office of the Chief of Police is not supposed to be a dynasty and Frank only got the job because the people after Henry were corrupt.
This is why I want Abigail to be the new commissioner.
She has always been loyal to Frank, not afraid to stand up to him, and has been a police officer before.
After working with Frank for so many years, no one knows the job better than she does.
Regardless, one thing we hope happens before “Blue Bloods” ends is that Frank passes the torch to a new commissioner.
It would be a nice way to end the series.
Jamie and Eddie form their family
A new baby Regan symbolizes the continued development of the Regan family after the series ends
Sudden pregnancy is a somewhat boring TV trope, but it can work as part of a series finale.
The most heartbreaking thing about losing Blue Bloods is that we will no longer have the opportunity to be a part of this fictional family, but the next best thing is knowing that this family will continue.
That’s why one thing we hope happens before the end of Blue Bloods is Addie announcing she’s pregnant.
This storyline wouldn’t work if the show continued, since Addie would continue to be active in the field until closer to her due date, and figuring out what to do with her when she can’t is unrealistic. Tricky.
However, as the series ended, these logistical difficulties disappeared.
Instead, Addie’s pregnancy could serve as a feel-good note for the finale.
It would be especially touching if she and Jamie decided to name their child after Henry (but please don’t let Henry die!)
Danny is with Baez (or someone else)
He’s on his way to new love, so let’s have it!
Danny has been a widower for six years, there’s no need for him to still be alone at the end of the series.
Many never remarry—Frank and Henry were both widowers for decades—but Danny recently admitted that he had been afraid of meeting new people for fear of losing them again.
There’s been a lot of speculation that Danny will be with Baez when Blue Bloods ends.
Whether or not that happens, he should end the series in a happy, new relationship, so one thing we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that his romantic future is made clear.
Even with psychic Maggie Gibson, she was my least favorite choice.
Another Henry-centric plot
Patriarch Regan should have a strong story before the series ends
Henry spent too much time speaking out at the dinner table in Season 14 and not much time outside of that.
One thing we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that he gets a strong, memorable story.
All we ask is that this isn’t a swan song before his needless death.
This would be a depressing ending that no one wants!
Henry often clashes with Jamie, who tends to treat him because he’s older, so if his final story resolves that, it would be a perfect ending for him.
Bonus points if he hangs out with Donna (Aleks Lezak) again.
She is a little freer than Henry and always has a smile on her face.
Erin confronts Jack Boyle again
Forget the romance – let them fight in court
Erin and Jack Boyle were the ultimate couple, years after their breakup, they kept flirting with the idea of getting back together, but never really materialized.
Whether or not they end up reunited, one thing we hope happens before the end of Blue Bloods is that Erin and Jack become adversaries in the courtroom again.
Jack always tries his best, which annoys Erin and makes it harder for her to focus on winning the case.
Not enough Erin in court lately, and having to deal with her ex-husband on a big case would make the final courtroom scene doubly sweet.
This would also reinforce the idea of Erin as a fighter for justice, which would be a perfect ending for her.
Sean gets some advice about his future from his brother
If Jack Regan returns, it should be to help Sean start his next chapter
One of the fascinating things about the early seasons of Blue Bloods was that Danny’s children were played by real-life brothers Tony and Andrew Terrasciano.
When Tony Terrasciano decided to go to college, his blue blood counterparts were eliminated.
While it’s interesting that Sean has grown up and is still around on the show, he needs another visit from his brother before the series ends.
This could lead to a Blue Bloods spinoff about Sean.
What’s more, it will reunite the brothers and reinforce the show’s tradition of putting family first.
Sean’s future is up in the air.
He’s already off to college, but it’s unclear what he’ll do.
He could follow in his family’s footsteps and become a police officer, fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a firefighter, or do something else entirely.
One thing we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that Sean is able to figure this out, preferably with the help of his brother.
Wouldn’t it be great if Andrew Terrasciano’s real-life brother could offer his fictional alter-ego advice on planning for his future?
A grand final family dinner including those who have moved out
Family dinner is a given, but the last meal should be special
There’s no doubt that “Blue Bloods” will end with one last family dinner.
This is the most iconic and beloved part of the show.
The Last Supper should be special, more like a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner (even though the episode isn’t holiday-themed) than a regular Sunday dinner.
One thing we hope happens before “Blue Bloods” ends is that every living Reagan — and honorary Reagan — attends the final Reagan Family Dinner.
Nicky and Jake are the absolute bare minimum. Danny can invite Bates and Jackie, Erin can invite Anthony, and Henry can invite Donna.
The Dream Team can also all be there so everyone can have a final toast to the Regan family.
It will be expensive and difficult to photograph, but regardless, it’s a beautiful dream and we hope it comes true.
The cancellation of “Blue Bloods” leaves a big hole in those who love family dramas, so it needs to at least offer a heartfelt toast to our favorite fictional families, including every character who loves them.
Over to you, blue blood fanatics. What do you hope happens before Blue Bloods ends?
