In Hollywood, nothing really dies. After decades of turning a profit, the franchise can be resurrected. Sequels can rise up even if their heroes have been killed off. Even dead actors can reprise their roles through computer-generated technology. All of this happened this summer, some good, some bad – mostly worse.
That’s why I came closer Beetlejuice Beetlejuice The mixture of excitement and anxiety was stomach-churning. I grew up with this movie and 36 years later I can still recite most of it. Michael Keaton’s Ghost had the biggest impact on my sense of humor, but Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara’s chic, vaguely gothic The clothing explosion shaped my personal style.
Most importantly, I want this long Talking about the 1988 sequel Beetlejuice Be a good person. But after a summer in which movies have deteriorated with fan-service pandering, coupled with a recent string of lackluster, underperforming Tim Burton films, I’m deeply cynical about the sequel’s release..
Sometimes it’s fun to be wrong. and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice This is the funniest error I’ve encountered in a long time. This movie is outrageous in all the right ways and even some wrong.
Burton’s back, baby.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice The story is set more than thirty years after the Dietz family moved to the sleepy town of Winter River, where they came into conflict with the recently deceased Maitlands and the eponymous creature they hired, the exorcist. Now, Lydia Dietz (Ryder) is a widow with her teenage daughter Astrid (WednesdayJenna Ortega respects and loves her with the same respect and affection she had for her stepmother Delia (O’Hara) all those years ago. (Of course, Delia is happy to point out this “karma.”) Tensions between mother and daughter aside, when Astrid ends up trapped in the Land of the Dead, Lydia turns to an old man Friends looking for help.
Through this premise, Burton is able to bring back various Beetlejuice There’s not a lot of pressure on images and catchphrases. (Looking at you, Alien: Romulus! Beetlejuice Beetlejuice It brings stop-motion sandworms, the iconic black-and-white striped suit designed by Colleen Atwood (she’s back too!), and a shrunken-headed ghost. In addition, Burton – with the help of screenwriters/Wednesday Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Miller – expand the realm of death, offering creepy, hilarious new characters and darkly hysterical laughs.
Which movie is like Dark Shadows, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and live action Dumbo It feels like a hollow Burton work – conveying his aesthetic but lacking his subversive strangeness and wild heart – Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Full of the director’s finest indulgences. It’s not just that the film looks like one of his sketchbooks come to life. The film’s humor is unrepentantly weird, treating everything from shark attacks to baby ghouls as fair game and making people laugh and gasp. childlike wonder Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and the provocation of teenagers Beetlejuice Keaton’s frenetic performance is refreshing as he gives it his all at every turn.

Fans of the original film may take issue with some of the character and plot tweaks, such as a brief dialogue explaining the Maitlands’ absence, or revamping Carapacejuice’s motivations for wanting to reconnect with Lydia. But Burton and his collaborators understood Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Also suitable for fans of ruined classics – like 1989 Beetlejuice The two were best friends in the cartoon series, as well as in the hit Broadway show. Beetlejuice has remained beloved for decades despite being the absolute villain in the original film. Keaton gives a sharp performance, both sinisterly charismatic and an absolute gangster.
Popular stories that can be mixed and matched
Critically acclaimed actors who have starred in the series Birdman, A movie about being trapped by one of your most iconic characters returns to Beetlejuice without any reservations or ego. Once again, this terrifying ghoul has a pronounced beer belly, sunken eyes, and a chin covered in rot and moss. He has the swagger of Elvis Presley and the mania of a cartoon. But is his physical comedy loose? That’s all Keaton is. He’s very goofy and totally game, and it’s great to see his juices unleashed again.
Catherine O’Hara remains a style icon to this day.

O’Hara made a splash as did the uncompromising, self-centered artist Delia Deetz. Once viewed as an evil stepmother with questionable taste in interior design, the world has now caught up with Delia, embracing her passion for ghost stories, dopamine dressing, and self-obsession. This time, her quirky artist becomes the voice of reason! Still, O’Hara and Burton occasionally reveled in Delia’s personal boldness. Bless them.
Likewise, Ryder – he’s been trapped in a dark, oppressive terror stranger things For the first time since 2016, Burton’s brand of horror levity is back once again. With her deep, bulging eyes, it’s easy to trace her rise from isolated, suicidal goth teen to ghost-hunting TV star whose daughter discovers she’s woefully unfashionable. Although Lydia’s story is filled with loss, Ryder and Burton keep things light by embracing the absurdity of life and die. This is basically a great thing.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Maybe too much? perhaps?
Willem Dafoe plays a terrible actor, but he’s great.

This sequel has a lot of plot. Not only does Lydia return to the haunted house where she formed with unfinished business, but she also has a producer/boyfriend (Justin Theroux, Penetration sketches) urging her to get married. Elsewhere, Astrid experiences her first love with a local boy (Arthur Conti), while Beetlejuice hides from his revenge-seeking ex-wife (Monica Bellucci) and A dead cop (Willem Dafoe), a braggart B-movie actor who played a cop in a previous life. All these threads are not so much woven together as they are clamped into a pile.
The good thing about all this story is that viewers get to enjoy some truly unhinged subplots. Bellucci plays a fierce and voluptuous femme fatale who moves around as if poison and red wine course through her veins. Dafoe, never afraid to push himself into drama, is excellent as a “bad” actor who is hilariously focused on his craft rather than actually solving the crime. Conte and Ortega’s subplot is gripping, enchanting, and reminiscent of an innocent romance edward scissorhands. However, Theroux’s subplot is predictable but becomes tiresome.

Theroux’s character, Rory, is a fresh take on the opportunistic Otto (Glenn Shaddix) from the first film, who lacks the foolish, self-righteous ego of Delia’s old friend Contentment, replaced by the kind of therapeutic language you can learn on TikTok. Of course, his character is meant to be a monster, but most of the liars, monsters, and critters in this world are pleasure. His was a little too annoying, maybe because he felt like he had the lowest height. Like, I think you could find Rory on any dating app with just a few swipes.
The final script is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Filled with characters, clues, and set pieces, it feels less like a movie and more like a collection of post-it notes for possible sequels. This creates a climax that is both confusing and confusing. Like, I’m not sure the ending actually makes sense. But I also feel at peace with it because logic is never Beetlejuice It’s really about.
exist BeetlejuiceThe Land of the Dead is absolutely confusing to both the living and the recently deceased; Handbook for the Recently Deceased Repeatedly described as “reading like three-dimensional instructions,” for the Maitlands, nothing about the afterlife is intuitive. Burton and his team use this setup as license to improvise and revel without the constraints of a traditional (or even coherent) plot line. I will admit that the third act is a mess, made up of musical numbers, stunts, dream sequences and absolutely crazy choices. But I can’t say I’m bothered because they were an absolute blast. Do you question the logic of roller coasters?
final, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice It’s pure Burton, passionate, unrestrained, indulgent. Fans of the original film will have every reason to cheer and even more reason to giggle.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice It will be released nationwide on September 6, also in IMAX theaters.
