Following its official announcement at Gamescom in August, Gearbox shared more information about Borderlands 4 during its main theater show at PAX West. While much of the game remains a mystery, fans have gotten their first look at some of the locations we might visit in the sequel via multiple pieces of concept art.
The new sequel will take place after “Borderlands 3” and will have a new planet and new vault hunters. Four pieces of concept art shown at PAX West show some of the possible locations in the new setting, including sci-fi cityscapes, hazy interiors, and cliffside structures.

The panel discussed some concept art, but mostly discussed the team’s vision for Borderlands’ aesthetic rather than providing any details about the new settings or pictured locations. “It’s high-tech, but low-fi,” explains art director Adam May. “It creates all kinds of interesting opportunities for how we use technology and weapons and characters and our world in general.”
“We can’t say too much,” May added when the second concept image was revealed, but he did hint that Borderlands 4 would break some new ground for the series. “[Something] We haven’t had the chance to play with some high-tech stuff in the past, so you can see here we’re doing a lot of digital projections like that.
“We also want to see something new,” he said. “We don’t want to repeat the same world over and over again. We can really play with more color and more technology in this world than in any other world.”
Another thing the Gearbox team has teased since Borderlands 4 is its antagonist, with Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford stating that players will face “much more dangerous” people than Handsome Jack.
Borderlands 4 will launch sometime in 2025 and is planned to be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
