Without any announcement from Square Enix, the mobile game “Kingdom Hearts Alliance X Dark Road” has been removed from the shelves.
The thing about Kingdom Hearts is that, if you actually play the game, it’s not that confusing overall. Over the years, Square Enix has made this easier with its various ports, which include full versions of some games and others compressed into cutscenes. But one game has remained stuck on mobile devices, despite being one of the most important games for the future of the series: Kingdom Hearts Alliance x Dark Road. There’s a whole bunch of lore surrounding this character, with one of the main characters even appearing in Kingdom Hearts 3 – another smaller but soon-to-be-important character, Strelitzia, also appeared in the first and only Kingdom Hearts 4 In a trailer. So why did Square Enix remove Union X Dark Road without any announcement?

Fans noticed last week that the game couldn’t be found and downloaded from the iOS or Google Play stores, and a few days later Square Enix didn’t appear to comment on it at all. For a while, the game’s website (which still works) allowed you to click on the Google Play Store banner to download it, and I’ve tested it myself and the game still runs fine – although all links now greet you with a page that says: “BANNED”, This at least makes Kingdom Hearts feel appropriate, even if it’s unsettling.
Another Kingdom Hearts mobile game, Missing Link, is coming soon, but despite some playtesting over the past few months, its actual release date has yet to be revealed. There’s always the possibility that this removal could make way for Missing Link, but Union it. Some fans are hoping for a full remake, but given Square Enix’s recent changes in business strategy, I think that’s an unlikely option.
Hopefully these cutscenes will be included somewhere in Kingdom Hearts 4 to make them easier to watch, otherwise Tetsuya Nomura might have quite a few fans in his inbox asking him about such heavy questions that mobile games have already answered. Legend problem.
