You can stop arguing about where The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Kingdom Tears sit on the timeline, Nintendo has solved the problem.
There are some Zelda games that are clearly connected to each other in various ways, such as Majora’s Mask, which is clearly a sequel to Ocarina of Time, Awakening, Both have the same characteristics as Link and Zelda in Link’s Awakening. But for the most part, despite Nintendo canonizing the timeline when it released The Legend of Zelda: History of Hyrule in 2011, the timeline isn’t actually all that important. It’s interesting to think about how the games’ respective histories might have influenced each other, but it’s not that important – and even then, people still debate where Breath of the Wild and Kingdom Tears fit into said timeline. In turn, they don’t sit anywhere.

According to Vooks, Nintendo appears to have shared a new look at Zelda’s history at Nintendo Live 2024 in Sydney, where you can clearly see that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have been isolated from other games. There isn’t even a line between them, which suggests they’re not all connected to each other, and that’s honest considering Kingdom Tears barely acknowledges Breath of the Wild.

Ever since Breath of the Wild came out in 2017, fans have been wondering where it might fit in, given the various references to almost every game and all of the game’s main timelines. Tears of the Kingdom doesn’t clear things up all that much either, but if you’re a Loremaster who’s gotten away with this kind of thing, you at least have your answers, even if it might frustrate or disappoint some of you. Oh well! I’m sure you’ll all feel normal about this.
