Risk of Rain 2 recently received the Stormseeker DLC update, which you can purchase now. However, it might be in your best interest to hold off on doing so, as the major update brings a rather serious set of bugs and flaws to the game. Until recently, this game was still at its best.
Bugs include but are not limited to random deaths, framerate issues, clipped textures, missing textures, missing teleporters, missing item highlights, speed of some movements relative to framerate (classic), orb attacks from the Wanderer being invincible. It’s a whole thing!

Why does this happen? Well, the gearbox doesn’t seem to be an issue anymore. The industry giant purchased the rights to Risk of Rain from original developer Hopoo Games about a year ago, and the Seekers of the Storm DLC is the first content update for the game developed entirely by Gearbox employees. Don’t take my word for it – Gearbox CEO and Magic enthusiast Randy Pitchford said on Twitter a few days ago that “this DLC is entirely a Gearbox effort”.
That’s bad enough for Gearbox, but Risk of Rain 2’s original co-creator also took to Discord to mourn the state of the game following the DLC’s release. To make matters worse, since they are not owners of Hopoo Games, they are not seeing returns from the sales. But the vast majority of the code in Risk of Rain 2 is theirs – it’s now being tweaked and occasionally mixed with new DLC.
Some players even try to create their own fixes, using mods to try and solve the problems they can. However, no matter how many fans decide to tinker, the state of DLC still leaves a lot to be desired.
Gearbox laid off a large number of employees after the company split from Embracer Group, but the exact scope and number of employees affected is still unclear. Will this have an impact on the Storm Seekers DLC? Who knows, but it’s been another bad year for Gearbox, and it’s proving to be a particularly testing one for the company.
Hopefully the Storm Seekers DLC will be fixed soon.
