If you need a compact, portable USB-C charger, Genki’s TurboCharger might be for you. The gaming accessory maker says its new gallium nitride (GaN) accessory is the “flattest” 100W wall charger on the market, capable of folding to a thickness of 18 mm (0.7 inches) for easier packaging.
The TurboCharger is Power Delivery (PD 3.0) compatible, with a pair of USB-C ports on the bottom that can provide up to 100W of power each, providing a 65W/30W power split if two devices are charged at the same time. Its slim design also means it can fit snugly in tight spaces such as behind sofas or cupboards, and its weight is closer to the wall to provide a more secure connection that’s less likely to come off. While the TurboCharger is aimed at users of handheld gaming PCs (for example, to provide enough power for the ROG Ally’s Turbo performance mode), there’s no reason you can’t use it for other gadgets.
However, it was launched as part of a Kickstarter campaign. If you’re not worried about crowdfunding risks, you can buy it for a special price of $48, which the company says will later be raised to $60 for general access.
One criticism of this design is that the charger can block the auxiliary outlet port or even the entire row of outlets on the power strip. Competitors like Anker’s $84.99 Foldable Prime Charger avoid this by putting the prongs at the end. But to get the best of both worlds (at the cost of wattage), Anker also plans to release a slim 65W charger later this year, with prongs that fold out to either orientation.
