In the Season 1 finale of The Lord of the Rings: Ring of Power, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) gave Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) an order: never to fight with Harb again. Rand (Charlie Vickers) speaks. She leaves out the important information that Harbrand is merely a human mask for the evil wizard Sauron, but as one of the oldest and highest-ranking elves in Middle-earth, she doesn’t feel she needs to explain herself for her orders. follow. Well, as viewers learned in the Ring of Power season 2 premiere, that’s a fatal overestimation of her influence over Galadriel.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.
[Halbrand and Celebrimbor]” the actor explained. If the elves of Linton had communicated with him more, he might not have let Halbrand in, but at this moment, Sauron was the only one who affirmed Celebrimbor’s value.
“When he appeared at the door, Celebrimbor was delighted to see him. However, he knew that he should not see him, but he did so anyway because by this stage he felt that he no longer understood the Three If something happened between people, I could invite this person in. He resisted, but then he went to see him.
Vickers agreed that Celebrimbor was in a tough spot and Sauron knew exactly how to manipulate him. Choosing Anata as his new mask was purposeful, with the actor tending to become even more glamorous while playing this latest version of the character.
“[Halbrand and Annatar] Both feel the same because they relate to the same things internally and are driven by the same things, especially Halbrand…there’s a big difference in the way it manifests itself externally. I wanted to bring a very different feel to Anata on screen than Halbrand. There’s a level of charm, but as a viewer you can feel there’s something sinister lurking beneath the surface that might not be visible to the characters on the show.
Even for viewers, there are moments in the show that make you question Sauron’s true purpose. He told Galadriel in the Season 1 finale that he wanted them to be together because she could make him better. We see the same theme in the prologue, where Halbrand questions whether he can ever change his evil ways. Weeks believes that Sauron did have moments of peeping conscience because that’s how Tolkien wrote the character.
“Tolkien certainly thought when he was writing about him in this period that he could be a good person, this idea of repentance, and Tolkien never specified whether he actually repented,” he said. “I like to keep it ambiguous, but he really thought hard about the idea in those moments, especially in the prologue. We see the idea being squashed very quickly.”

Halbrand, Annatar, or Sauron, whatever you want to call him, didn’t seem to question the path forward at the end of the premiere episode. At this moment, he had brought Celebrimbor and the elves to where he wanted them, and they knew nothing about it.
“Sauron is good at this. He knows it. Maybe he uses a little bit of magic, too,” Weeks said of his character’s manipulative abilities.
“The answer is obvious,” Edwards added. “He was fascinated by Sauron. Sauron was extraordinarily persuasive in ways that were not obvious.”
This persuasion now set the Elves on a path that would change the face of Middle-earth forever.
