In this week’s chapter, Stardust stares at the Stigmata and Ai crosses swords with Mai. shy. This was a more focused episode than the previous one, and I enjoyed it more.
Stardust team-up with Dishonored is a solid superhero action/feature film. The beginning is actually quite funny; as an adult punches a child in the face, we see the whole world watching with reverent joy. I thought That At first, this was going to be Stygma’s angle – bad PR – and I was a little disappointed that his stated goal – fear – was so rote and vague. I know villains like to be mysterious and aloof, but I’d like to see Shame stop being a secret. But on the other hand, I love how his war-torn appearance reveals how empty he really is on the inside. It’s a reflection of his own ruthlessness (in contrast to the passionate power of Teru and her allies), but I wonder if it’s also an acknowledgment of his shallow supervillain status. perhaps shy There are even more sinister plans for this dapper young man.
For now, the kinematics of this fight are interesting. Unsurprisingly, Stigma is not a combative person, so he instead lets the skittish ghost Kabala get her ectoplasmic hands dirty. Loyalty aside, she’s a horror movie fan, so she’s pretty good in my book. I also like how her gimmick rivals Stardust’s. You may remember that his power kept everyone away from him. However, Kabala can reflect the damage she takes onto him, bypassing Stardust’s defenses. These are complementary metaphors for psychological damage; Stardust isolates himself from people to avoid getting hurt, but his ability to be callous and callous towards others can backfire and hurt him. These are some of Teru’s “weaknesses” that awaken his senses. Stardust is not impermeable. No one is. But persevering in faith despite this weakness is where the real strength lies.
Yes, it’s a bit contrived, but it works! where is this shyStardust’s adaptation works to its advantage because the music, boarding, animation, and voice acting all come together to make Stardust’s big power-ups feel rather over-the-top. I particularly like his special move that tracks a large star around an enemy. It’s a perfect sequence of superhero Schmalz, and it’s nice to confirm that I’m not completely immune to these charms when they’re executed expertly and confidently.
Inside the sphere, Ai and Hui fight against Mai’s evil intentions. Here, I really liked the additional background Mai provided about the brutal environment in which she and her sister grew up. I think it’s more likely that Ai Weiwei’s naivety blinded her to the reality of the ninja way. I thought her flashbacks felt pretty toothless, and Mai pretty much confirmed that this week. This is a smart development. Now, we can deduce that as the eldest of the twins, Mai likely protected her younger sister from violence out of the compassion we hear Ai feel for her. She’s a good person, but kindness and killing have taken their toll – and Stigma manages to channel this exhaustion into resentment against her village and family. Mai’s heart was psychologically and emotionally damaged, so she reflected this by physically hurting her sister’s heart.
Ai also proves that she is a product of her upbringing, as she relies on her own conditioning and impales Mai with her blade. A villain manipulating a hero into tainting himself is nothing new, but the family background makes the stakes matter here. I want to see both sisters okay. No matter how much I expected this episode to end, it certainly didn’t end with the twins merging into one fox-like creature. This is a very interesting and strange development, and I can’t wait to see how Teru handles it.
On a final note, I’m glad to hear Shinichiro Miki Sing that Bowie-esque rock song for the Stardust-themed ED. I think the last time I heard him sing was in love story open. His voice is very nice! I need a full album of him crooning old man songs.
