Developed by Apple, Amazon, Google and Samsung (among others), Matter is an open source, IP-based connectivity software layer for smart home devices. It runs over Wi-Fi, Ethernet and low-power mesh networking protocol Thread, and currently supports more than 30 device types. These include lighting, thermostats, locks, robot vacuums, refrigerators, dishwashers, dryers, ovens, smoke alarms, air quality monitors, electric vehicle chargers and more.
Smart home gadgets bearing the Matter logo can be set up and used with any Matter-compatible ecosystem through Matter controllers, and controlled by multiple devices with “multi-management” capabilities.
Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Apple Home are some of the major smart home platforms that support Matter, as well as hundreds of device manufacturers.
