Less than a month after Borderlands was released, Lionsgate has confirmed that the film will be released digitally this week.
Borderlands is not a movie that I or anyone else in my opinion would call a good movie. In fact, I’d say it was pretty bad, which is what I did in my review of the film. Unsurprisingly, the video game adaptation bombed at the box office, opening to a $16 million budget. For $115 million, which is, to put it bluntly, terrible. Apparently, this result doesn’t satisfy Lionsgate either, because yesterday the production company announced that a premium video and on-demand version of the film will be released later this week, on August 30th. It’s only coming out in August 9, which means it’ll be available digitally three weeks after release.

You can buy the movie for $25, or rent it for 48 hours, which will cost you $20. Obviously, buying it is the better option of the two, but if you ask me, don’t bother with either one and wait until it finally comes out on a streaming service where you can say “Oh, Borderlands” Now on Netflix” and immediately scrolled through all the other shows and movies before deciding not to bother anymore and getting back to Twitter. It’s still a better use of your time.
At least there’s some good news for fans of video games. Last week at Gamescom Opening Night Live, 2K and Gearbox Software finally revealed that they were developing Borderlands 4, but they didn’t reveal much. It’s the classic “Yes, it’s real!” Although Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has previously teased its existence, we all knew it was coming anyway. Still, it’s better than nothing, and for Gearbox’s sake, you’d better hope the game is good enough to help the few people who see the movie forget about it.
