Samsung said it will provide seven years of Tizen operating system updates for its new artificial intelligence TVs to fend off competition from Chinese rivals. According to reports, the news was announced last week at Samsung Electronics’ Suwon campus. Business Koreaand will first apply to TV models released in March 2024, and some products released in 2023.
This policy expansion is a significant leap compared to the updates currently provided by Samsung, which often resolve bugs without upgrading the Tizen operating system itself. The move comes as Samsung, currently the world’s largest smart TV seller, finds its market leadership challenged by Chinese companies such as Hisense and TCL. Research by analytics firm Omdia found that in the first half of this year, Samsung’s share of the global TV market was close to 29%, down more than 2% from the same period last year, followed by TCL and Hisense, with 12.1% and 10% respectively. .
Yong Seok-Yoon, president of Samsung Electronics’ visual display division, said: “With seven years of free upgrades to Tizen for AI TVs, we will widen the market share gap with Chinese companies.” Samsung has not specified the exact models guaranteed to benefit from the expanded updates. .
