The winners of the first American Comic Awards were announced on August 22 at a gala event held by the Japan Society, which kicked off New York Comic Con. Spearheaded by The Beat’s Deb Aoki, the event is unique and celebrates those behind the scenes, including translators and copywriters, as well as the best in the category.
The awards are hosted by authors and localizers Matt Alter and includes opening remarks by Japanese illustrators Archie Bright.

His remarks – looking back to his earliest days of writing comics – show just how far comics have come in America – from a very, very obscure, inaccessible niche for die-hard fans, to a niche market filled with An industry with ubiquitous vitality and influence.
