governor of minnesota Tim WaltzThe Democratic vice presidential nominee appears to be a level-headed guy. People seemed to like him. How can you hate someone who owns a Dreamcast and plays the game Crazy Taxi?
Following this week’s Democratic National Convention, Tim Walz officially became the party’s vice presidential nominee, following Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race in July. Current Vice President Kamala Harris stepped up to become the Democratic Party’s de facto presidential candidate after Biden dropped out. Walz is a clear choice for many reasons, including his progressive policies and “dad vibe.” But for most of August, the main thing I saw people talking about was how Waltz became the big boss of the Sega Dreamcast.
First mention of Tim Waltz as a gamer
It all started shortly after Harris announced Walz as her pick for vice president. August 9, new york times publish report About the Minnesota governor and former football coach. Buried quietly in the article is a brief mention that Walz played so much Dreamcast that his wife reportedly “got hold of it” and hid it from him.
As you might expect, this led to a lot of people saying, “Wait, Walz is a Dreamcast guy?” People started digging into the video game history of the story and the Vice Presidential nomination. This led to someone discovering an old post on ResetEra from 2018 in which user Bryn Tanner claimed to own Walz’s Dreamcast console.
“Well, I bought a Dreamcast for $25 in 2012 from one of his former high school students who worked on his campaign at the time.” Posted by Bryn Tanner in November 2018. “Walz was like ‘Hey, we have this old video game thing, do you want it?’ and the guy took it.
that day Now Walz’s profile is online, Bryn Tanner posts again about Dreamcast on ResetEra. “LMAO. Yes, I still have these fucking Dreamcast rules!
Wapo Comments on Dreamcast, IGN find its owner
August 19, washington post publish An in-depth article ties Walz’s candidacy to the Dreamcast and video gaming as a whole.
But at their best, video games are more than just a pastime. A reasonable definition of a video game is “a problem that needs to be solved.” For those who are fully committed to the cause, there’s something telling: a desire to see broken things fixed—to practice the work of repairing systems through play.
This resulted in a bad tweet from conservative idiot, weirdo, and bad tweet expert Charlie Kirk. On August 19, Kirk attempted a dunk. Funny story about Waltz loving his Dreamcast and seeing it as a negative, asking: “Doesn’t anyone think it’s a little sad that a 35-year-old man is addicted to video games? Or, dare I say, weird?” As you might expect, Mr. Kirk was in pretty bad shape, with big names in the video game industry mocking him in their replies.
“Video gaming has grown into a major form of entertainment around the world. It was really ahead of its time. Plus, the Dreamcast is an incredible platform,” Replied Former Xbox hypeman and current Unity community director Larry Hyrb.
at last, IGN Beautiful thanks to reporter Rebekah Valentine for the entire Dreamcast story. She found the owner of ResetEra Dreamcast and talked to them about Walz’s console. He put her in touch with Tom Johnson, who had worked with Walz on his congressional campaign.
“Walz is really a great and normal guy,” Johnson told IGN.
“He’s one of those guys who, like, he’s your friendly neighbor and then you find out he has the Guinness World Record for free throw percentage. He’s just a regular guy who just happens to be the governor as well. People say he’s a down-to-earth guy. , very friendly, very friendly, very serious, it’s all true.
According to Johnson, when Walz brought the Dreamcast to his campaign office, it included a Crazy Taxi. Does this mean there was a lot of competition for the vice presidential nomination? Crazy Taxi? perhaps. But then again, who owns the Dreamcast and No have one Crazy Taxi? Regardless, it’s nice to know that one of the Dreamcast’s ills might one day occupy the White House.
