- iPhone Photography Award Winners. IPPA Photographer of the Year shoots on iPhone 11! These award-winning photos are always an amazing source of inspiration (just saying, wallpapers too), and in this moment of AI taking over, it’s especially cool to see how amazing photographers still are.
- hollywood hacker. The Sony hack happened 10 years ago, and the entire entertainment industry is still feeling its impact. I’m loving this pod so far, and so far it’s been about as much of an impact on what’s happened as it has been on Hollywood.
- blink twice. Channing Tatu. Play as a tech billionaire. In a murder thriller. I grew up glass onion This makes me extremely excited.
- Apple Web Podcasts. Apple made a great web app! I still can’t believe it! Apple Podcasts is a great platform and this goes a long way in making it less tethered to a specific device. Plus the automated transcripts make me really consider switching.
- ocean explorer. This NatGeo show feels like a hybrid planet earth And that scene in every James Bond movie where Bond tests out a bunch of crazy new futuristic gadgets. I enjoyed learning about the high-tech ships and submarines as much as I enjoyed seeing the amazing footage of them.
- “The flipped video worked! So they killed it? I simply forgot about the Flip camera and had no idea how many strange twists and turns the product and the company that made it had gone through. This is a super fun time capsule of technology.
- wire cutter show. I have always been loyal wire cutters Forever a shopper, the new pod fits the vibe of the site perfectly. A lot of tips and tricks, a lot of behind-the-scenes testing stuff—I took angry notes on the first two episodes.
- “Why is everything a monopoly… again”. We’re in a really crazy antitrust moment, right? Here’s a quick, broad look at how it all works, and how we got to the point where no matter what you’re doing, using, or buying, you’re likely to encounter a monopoly.
- Ring Battery Doorbell. Longer battery, easier installation, wider video frame, color night vision – this isn’t a groundbreaking new idea for a video doorbell, but it does look like a better video doorbell. If only I could convince myself to let me install one…
Screen sharing
I follow Liam James Not just anyone but my wife – honestly, it was a close call between the two of them. as edgeWe do a lot of work together as supervising producers of the podcast edge broadcastand he is also the best technical guy. He likes to brag about his Plex server, seems to be constantly tweaking his homemade weather station, and recently described a new to-do list app to me as “OmniFocus for Dummies.” What I’m trying to say is, he’s our people.
I asked Liam to share his home screen with us because if there’s one thing I know about Liam, it’s that every icon and location is exhaustively considered and rigorously tested for optimal performance. Liam also just bought a Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which meant he was about to make a major switch – so I thought it would be a good idea to capture his final moments with the iPhone.
Here’s Liam’s home screen, along with some info about the apps he uses and why:
Telephone: iPhone 15 Pro.
wallpaper: I’ve been using the same wallpaper for about 10 years. This is a silly painting of my first dog, August, in the style of Kehinde Wiley.
app: Photos, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple News, Phone, Mail, Safari, Messages.
- I’m a big fan of a large carousel of widgets that automatically flips to whatever iOS deems most relevant to me. I only keep 3 widgets: fantastic —I’m going to miss this so much when I switch to Pixel— Apple Newsand carrot weather.
- In order to maintain a single-screen layout, I kept deleting apps I no longer used. I have four folder buckets: Social, Shopping, Finance, and Work. While traveling, though, I do return to the App Library screen to look for rarely used apps, like Plex.
- I really like the unlabeled icon option in iOS 18 beta. Looks much cleaner.
I also asked Liam to share something that interests him right now. This is what he sent back:
- My job forces me to use Apple Podcasts To keep an eye on our show, you know what? It has certainly come a long way. In my opinion, it’s the only podcast app that recommends shows you’ll actually want to try. New transcript and search features make it easy to find the moment you want to return to.
- I’ve been trying out the native Mail app since I ran the iOS 18 public beta. I want to see if the Apple Intelligence stuff will work for me, but it’s not quite there yet. Instead, it’s still basically the same old barebones, slow-to-update apps.
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus is smarter than me is my latest obsession with podcasts. Like many celebrity podcasts, it changes with the seasons, but unlike all the others, this one has zero filler. I strongly recommend starting from The episode stars award-winning author Isabel Allende. Some of Allende’s life lessons will stay with you for days.

It’s fantasy football season, which means my personality will be replaced by my opinions on how NFL players are performing each week. I belong to two leagues, both within Yahoo’s apps, which is… nice. This year, I started to realize that these jobs are actually a full-time job; the news goes out to so many places and everyone has rankings and data about those rankings and podcasts about data about those rankings, and it’s all exhausting.
Ironically, I think I understand the rationale for artificial intelligence now? If I could just say “what happened to my fantasy team this week” and ChatGPT could tell me, I would be there in a heartbeat. Some apps are trying to emulate this — including Yahoo — but now that Twitter is gone, everything feels more cluttered than ever. If you have an amazing source for all this please let me know! No matter how much attention I give, though, I always seem to be in sixth place…so maybe I’ll leave it alone.
(Also, next year: Install a fantasy league? Should we? I think we should. That would be awesome.)
