Denis VilleneuveHe, one of the few filmmakers working today who consistently makes films that are well-received by critics and audiences, will be the subject of a career retrospective hosted by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, SBIFF announced Wednesday.
All 11 of Villeneuve’s films will be screened from October 18 to 24 at the SBIFF Riviera Theatre, which was acquired in 2016 and serves as a year-round venue. Q&A at the venue Sunday, October 20.
The 56-year-old Canadian has been a prominent figure in the international film industry for about 15 years. He directed his first four feature films in Canada, three of which were ultimately nominated by Canada for the Academy Award now known as Best International Film, including 2010’s firewas nominated and helped him become famous. He then began working abroad and has since overseen seven major features: 2013’s prisoner and enemy; 2015 sicario; 2016 arrive; 2017 Blade Runner 2049; 2021 dune;and, recently, Dune: Part 2one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful releases of 2024.
“Dennis has become the undoubted master of modern cinema and all of his films need to be seen on the big screen as they are visceral spectacles,” SBIFF Executive Director Roger Dulin said in a statement. “We are very keen to be able to screen these films again and host Denis at the state-of-the-art Riviera.”
