“Game of Thrones” is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series of fantasy novels and is HBO’s breakthrough. It debuted in 2011 and has spanned multiple eras of its network’s ownership and technology.
The show shows that large audiences can respond to fantasy dramas with strong mythological overtones. It also includes a large number of names of people and places.
Although the series eventually transcended Martin’s published books, many fans were unhappy with the series’ ending. But Game of Thrones is still remembered.
As with today’s most beloved franchises, the current overseers at Warner Bros. Discovery are trying to expand the franchise in more directions into the future indefinitely.
Although George R.R. Martin still has to finish the A Song of Ice and Fire series, he has already written several other works set in that universe, which would be natural candidates for adaptation.

game of Thrones
The main series of “Game of Thrones” began in 2011 and lasted until 2018, with a total of eight seasons. .
It first focuses on the War of the Five Kings and then continues the story of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) as she reclaims the throne for the Targaryen dynasty.
Other major storylines in the show include Tyrion Lannister’s (Peter Dinklage) quest for the respect of his family and his subsequent rise as a political advisor.
There’s also Jon Snow (Kit Harington) who rises from Northern bastard to recruit of the Night’s Watch and King of the North.
The series follows the conflict between humans and the White Walker armies.
Over the years that Game of Thrones has aired, off-screen subplots have been about whether the series would move faster than the original before Martin finished them. As it turns out, the series was years ahead of the original.
Game of Thrones has been one of the most popular and pirated TV shows for most of its time. And it also spans major changes in the industry.
HBO began as a premium cable channel. By the end, streaming was starting to take hold. The company first launched HBO G and later launched HBO Now.
blood moon/long night
Even before Game of Thrones ended, HBO made it clear that it wanted more shows set in its universe. At one point, the network announced that it was launching several different spin-off series simultaneously.
The first one to arrive in the pilot episode didn’t continue to develop as a series.
According to the A Song of Ice and Fire wiki, the series’ “production title” is Blood Moon. It is also sometimes called Game of Thrones: The Long Night.
The background of the show is set in the “Heroic Age” thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones”. Jane Goldman is the show’s producer.
HBO announced the pilot in June 2018. Other cast members include Josh Whitehouse, George Henry, Naomi Aki and Sheila Atim.
They filmed the pilot episode, but although the results were not satisfactory, the network announced in October 2019 that it would no longer continue filming.
That same day, HBO announced that another prequel series was in the works, and that it had been given a live order.
dragon house
This show is “House of the Dragon”, which is also a prequel, but the story background is closer to the events in “Game of Thrones”, about 200 years after the beginning of the War of the Five Kings.
The direct material of the play comes from Martin’s 2018 book “Fire and Blood”, which depicts a civil war within the Targaryen known as the “Dance of Dragons”.
Martin Condal and Ryan Condal created the series, with Condal and Miguel Sapochnik serving as showrunners for the first season.
From the beginning, in addition to HBO, the show also aired on what was then HBO Max (now Max).
One of the processions is Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma Darcy), assisted by her uncle/husband Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).
The other is King Aegon II Targaryen (played by Tom Green-Carney), and his assistant mother is Queen Mother Allison Hightower (played by Olivia Cooke).
The series also has far more dragons than Game of Thrones. During that particular era, dragons were a part of everyday life in Westeros.
The first season of House of the Dragon premiered in the summer of 2022, with the second season launching in the summer of 2024 due to strike delays. HBO has announced that the show will be airing a fourth season.
knight of the seven kingdoms
HBO announced in June 2024 that the next drama in the series, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, had begun production after receiving a formal order the year before.
This play is adapted from Martin’s novella “The Story of Dunk” and “The Story of Egger”, starting from the first “The Hedge Knight”.
The series follows the adventures of a knight named Sir Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his much shorter squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansel), who is also Targaryen prince.
The story of the show is set after the events of “House of the Dragon” and before the events of “Game of Thrones”. The six-episode first season will air on HBO and Max in 2025.
Untitled “Aegon’s Conquests” series
In February 2024, HBO announced that it was developing a series about Aegon’s Conquests. These events resulted in the Targaryens taking control of the kingdom of Westeros for the first time.
Aegon the Conqueror was the first of many Targaryen kings named Aegon, and his conquests preceded the events of House of the Dragon.
“Batman” writer Mattson Tomlin is writing the series, although it hasn’t been greenlit yet.
Snow
In the years since Game of Thrones ended, there have been reports of a sequel following Jon Snow’s adventures following the main series.
However, the show was never greenlit, and Kit Harington revealed in a 2024 interview that the show was “no longer in active development.”
“Right now, it’s not being discussed because we can’t find the right story to tell that we’re all excited about,” Harrington said in an interview.
Other programs
These are unlikely to be the last Game of Thrones spinoffs, but they are the only ones officially announced so far.
Among the series in development is Sea Serpent (also known as Nine Voyages), which focuses on Lord Corlys Velaryon, played by Steven Toussaint in House of the Dragon. Role.
Different versions are either live-action or animated, but have yet to be approved.
The other is Ships of All Ships, another potential prequel that will examine the history of Dorne, one of the less developed regions of the Seven Kingdoms.
After the show was canceled, it was revived but not officially aired.
As Martin wrote in a 2022 blog post, an animated spin-off called Empire of Gold was also in development at one point, though there’s little sign that it’s still in production.
There are thousands of years of legends to discover.
This includes everything from Robert’s Rebellion to events that take place after the end of Game of Thrones, which may show up in future series.
