A new article in Variety discusses director Todd Phillips’ upcoming musical/character study/courtroom drama/comic sequel Clown: Pas de deuxincluding some hitherto unknown jokes – including what happens in the film’s opening moments.
As revealed by the outlet, the sequel begins with a “Looney Tunes-inspired” animated sequence from a guest director triplets of bellevilleSylvain Chomet. The story that follows “travels through prison riots, courtroom confrontations and variety shows to discover [Joaquin] Phoenix and [Lady] Gaga portrays the murderous Sonny and Cher,” as the Joker and Harley Quinn. “The goal of the movie was to feel like it was made by crazy people,” said Phillips. “The inmates are running the asylum.
This article also confirmed pas de deux The story is set “two years after the first film” and follows Arthur Fleck as he “faces the death penalty” in a psychiatric ward after murdering talk show host Murray Franklin on-air. There, he meets a fellow patient, Harleen “Lee” Quinzel (Gaga), “who is obsessed with him — or, rather, his alter ego, the Joker.” Arthur Ditch the drugs and leap into a fantasy world that’s often as psychedelic as last year’s MGM musical.
The outlet also revealed three songs the off-steroids duo will perform, including “Get Happy,” “For Once in My Life” and “That’s Life,” noting that Joker is “drawn to romantic ballads,” while Harley “prefers music that’s about power.” Phillips is quick to point out that the film doesn’t stop at performing familiar numbers because “much of the music in the movie is really just dialogue. It’s just that Arthur doesn’t have the words to say what he wants He said it, so he could only sing it.
Variety’s article goes on to describe Lady Gaga’s new, completely different performance as Harley Quinn. “We took away the high notes, the accents, the gum chewing, all those funky things in the comics,” Phillips said. “We wanted her to fit into the Gotham world we created from the first movie.”
Gaga told the industry, “Todd made a lot of changes to the whole concept and the script, giving the sequel clown Such boldness and complexity. There is music, there is dance, there is drama, there is court drama, there is comedy, there is happiness, there is sadness. this is a proof [Todd] As a director, he would rather be creative than just tell a traditional love story.
Despite the possibility of a new Joker and Harley multimedia franchise, Phillips concluded the interview by saying he has no plans for a follow-up (yet) pas de deux: “It’s fun to play two movies in a sandbox like this, but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world.”
