The best comics to buy this week, August 21, feature several action-packed takes on older characters, especially Destro and Wolverine. Beyond that, we’ve got a pretty interesting grab bag of other strong books, with some horror stories and… well, whatever you consider wonderfully weird Paranoid Garden. Check out my five picks below, along with the usual checklist…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on August 21, 2024
Right #3
writer: Dan Waters
artist: Andrea Milan
Colorist: Adriano Lucas
Writer: Ross Wootton
Publisher: Picture Comics – Skybound
Trapped in the mountains without any weapons, Destro must survive the Chameleon’s wrath. But who is the Chameleon? Why do they want Laird Destro dead?
Why it’s cool: I’m shocked at how poorly this book was able to come up with an explanation for this silly character who has a metal face and was apparently named by removing a letter from the word “Destruction.” This issue resolves the aforementioned Metal Face issue, making it not only plausible but a compelling character moment. I like it.

Epitaph from the Abyss #2
Story author: Matt Kindt and Klaus Jansen;Tyler Crook; and Jason Aaron and Jorge Fornes
Colorist: Michelle Madsen
Engraver: Richard Stuckins and Tyler Smith
Publisher: they press
In this month’s Fantastic Horror Fest: three all-new stories of depraved intent and traumatic tension from Deathly Confused writers Jason Aaron (Thor, Bastards of the South), Matt King (BRZRKR, Mind MGMT) and writer/artist Taylor Crook (Harrow County), and forever with artists Klaus Janssen (The Dark Knight Returns) and Jorge Fornes ( Batman ) blood-stained brushstrokes combined!
Why it’s cool: Last month, when I recommended the first horror anthology of the new EC Comics revival, I pointed out that I thought the entire project had a very difficult road ahead of it. Well, I’m happy to report that I actually enjoyed the second issue better than the first, especially the final story, which felt like the best modernization of EC’s legacy yet. Also, please note that the second story is heartbreaking and well done.

Paranoid Garden #2
writer: Gerald Way and Sean Simon
artist: Chris Weston
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Writer: Nate Pickos
Publisher: dark horse comics
The emergency room meets psychedelics for a new, surreal comic experience. Lou continues to be plagued by mysterious dark visions, and while she works to care for the care center’s patients, she discovers darker plans behind other staff members.
Why it’s cool: Simply put, Paranoid Garden is my new obsession with weird comics. This book breaks away from any kind of box, which makes it feel extremely unpredictable from page to page. In addition, the team of Chris Weston and Dave Stewart is also a strong team. Don’t miss this comic.

Something crawls out #1
writer: Son M.
artist: Crazy Curse
Colorist: Vittorio Aston
Writer: Jim Campbell
Publisher: Shelter Comics
Something evil crawled out screaming.
Edith “Eddie” Miller had no grand plans or far-reaching vision. She slept in during the day and worked shifts at a gas station at night. But when her sister fails to return home, Addie discovers a web of missing girls and rotting corpses. The police prove useless, so Addie joins forces with her best friend Reina in a desperate search for her sister. The only thing is – Addie believes her best friend might be the devil himself.
Why it’s cool: I’ve been saying this for years, and it’s as true today as it was not that long ago, but a new first for Vault Comics is always a big deal. Something crawls out #1 No exception, this is another subversive and fascinating take on horror. I mean, look at that cover.

Wolverine’s Revenge #1
writer: Jonathan Hickman
pencil: Greg Capullo
Inker: Tim Townsend
Colorist: FCO Placencia
Writer: Corey Pettit
Greg Capullo makes his grand return to Marvel Comics storytelling as he and Jonathan Hickman pit Wolverine against a group of enemies that will turn his world upside down! He was beaten! He’s full of blood! And Logan has only one thought in his mind: revenge! Don’t miss this celebrated miniseries that will become one of the defining stories in Wolverine lore!
Why it’s cool: Well, in a nutshell, this is Hickman and Capullo making Wolverine…and not only that, but any action-set comic starring Wolverine that also has something to do with the Cold War. Sure, it feels like the comic might have been a little asked to star in some of the major roles in recent movies, but it’s just as good. This is just a collaboration between some of the most talented creators in the industry and one of the most enduring superhero characters of all time.
