It’s hard to accurately gauge how excited people are about any particular game before it’s released. Black Myth: Wukong, the first console game from Chinese developer Game Science, has been highly anticipated, but I certainly didn’t think it would do so well.
The release of the PC version is progressing smoothly, and “Black Myth: Wukong” currently ranks fourth on Steam in terms of the number of simultaneous online players. Just four hours before I wrote this, the game’s concurrent player count peaked at 1,443,570, according to SteamDB.
That’s enough to put the game in fourth place for the highest number of concurrent players ever on Steam, just shy of beating Counter-Strike 2’s peak of 400,000 players.
However, “Black Myth: Wukong” did not become the most played game so far this year. This record is still held by Palworld, with the game’s highest number of simultaneous online users reaching 2,101,287 people. But it does give it second place.
“Black Myth: Wukong” defeated “Cyberpunk 2077”, “Elden Ring” and “Baldur’s Gate 3” to take the fourth place.
Of course, it’s possible that Black Myth’s numbers will continue to grow. Often games will hit their highest numbers on the first or second day and then taper off, but sometimes they manage to keep growing. Hellraiser 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 are good examples.
We also don’t know how the game will perform on the PlayStation 5, where it might appeal to more people.
Regardless, Black Myth: Wukong looks set to be a huge success for Game Science.
