“Alien: Romulus” director Fede Alvarez shared 13 simple, yet hilarious, tips that show creator Ridley Scott gave him on his first day of filming.
Several directors have helmed the Alien franchise over the years, but it all started with Ridley Scott’s 1979 original film. Following the first film, he directed a new entry in the series until 2012’s “Prometheus,” and returned as director again with 2017’s “Alien: Covenant,” the latest feature film in the series. Alien: Romulus will end a seven-year streak without an Alien movie later this week, and director Fede Alvarez shared a post on Instagram the weekend before the film’s release. It shows the advice Scott sent him: Make a movie.

“Dear Feder,” the message began. “Good luck. Good health. Good hunting. Don’t mess this up. Best wishes, Ridley Scott.” If you’ve read any of Scott’s interviews, you’ll feel like this is especially about the brand , and almost unbearably British if not a little bit charming. Overall, they’re obviously not directly helpful advice, but I can only imagine how grateful Alvarez was to receive anything from Scott, especially receiving such a message on the first day of filming. After all, they’re big boots to fill (even if a lot of the movies aren’t actually that good).

First reactions to the film are also starting to emerge, with Variety’s Courtney Howard sharing that the film is “rough, gripping, and utterly bleak (from the storyline to Olivares’s cinematography, to Walfish’s score).
Andrew J. Salazar of Discussing Film was slightly more critical, writing: “Alien: Romulus doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, Federer A.L. Varese screws up his take on a classic horror story with some truly brilliant visual storytelling, but overall, it sounds like you had a great time.
Alien: Romulus will be released on August 16th (later this week).
