during an interview screen saverActor who starred opposite Daisy Edgar Jones in the 1996 sequel tornadorecently shared his reaction to the surprising uproar over the film’s omission of a kiss between the two leads.
“I take this very seriously!” he said. “I’m sure you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes footage, and I did kiss Daisy Edgar-Jones, and that’s all that matters. [Laughs] We had a great time and I’m very proud of the film.
Throughout the film, romantic tension builds between Storm Chaser Tyler, played by Powell, and Kate, a retired tornado chaser played by Edgar Jones, who join forces to fight a massive tornado. However, the on-screen kiss never made it into the final cut, and footage of the two stars filming an alternative ending to their kiss didn’t appear on social media until later (much to the dismay of some fans).
“I really think that even though [backlash] It’s really nice to show that people care,” Powell added. “I just love how excited people are about this movie, and Daisy and I are sending TikToks and GIFs to each other. There’s a lot of fun stuff in it. It’s fun. That’s what summer movies are about. It creates this conversation and cultural moment, It’s really cool that people dress up and do it, so, kissing or not, everyone’s a winner.
Director Isaac Lee has previously shared his reasons for choosing a non-kissing ending and stands by his final decision.
“I actually tried the kiss, and it was very polarizing — and it wasn’t because of their performance of the kiss,” the filmmaker said. “this [no-kiss shot] Was my other choice for the day shoot and I must say, I liked it better. I think this is a better ending. I think people who want to kiss in there, they probably assume that these guys are going to kiss one day. Maybe we can give them privacy for that.
He continued at the time: “In a way, this ending is a means of making sure that we really end things in a celebratory, good way. If it all ends with a kiss, then Kate’s journey seems to end with a kiss . But instead, it would be best if she could just keep doing what she was doing with a smile on her face.
Edgar-Jones also described the final cut’s ending as “beautiful and refreshing”.
