“I grew up watching B-level horror movies from the 80s and 90s. I also grew up in a small country.
town. Gubbers It’s a love letter to both parties! I love being able to smash some of my favorite genres, movies, and comics together with my love for North Carolina. I also loved being able to express the frustrations of growing up in a small town and being uncomfortable with how they viewed me and the way I lived my life. Back in 2021, at the height of COVID-19, I moved back home for six months to spend time with my parents, and this was my home Gubbers was truly born. I’ve always wondered what made certain towns feel the same way, even with minor changes, and came up with the obvious answer: alien worms must have invaded and snatched people’s bodies. GubbersIn a lot of ways, it’s just my comedic way of dealing with these emotions, while also paying homage to some of my favorite movies, like Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Dead
Squirm, get out, and Revenge of the Living Dead.

“When I first passed Cody’s script goobers, I recognized our similar creative sensibilities and knew it was going to be a messy job. The script is hilarious and touching, but hardcore when it gets to the heart of horror and action. Gubbers wriggling its spiny larval body into the monster obsession I’ve cherished since I was a kid. I was lucky enough to grow up in the golden age of mischievous little freaks: Gremlins, ghouls. Small animals, snacks. Trolls, lunatics. Garbage Pail Kids. comics. Crack Monster Party. Mercer Meyer’s Monster Books. these are
My muse. There was something magical about these monsters, they dug their claws into my brain and sparked my imagination to draw and create my own critters. Enter Gubbers: The continuation of obsession. It’s good, not-so-clean fun as ravenous alien worms infest the charming town of Pine Cove and transform it into a hellish nightmare landscape. It’s so rewarding to learn about my broad horror language from movies like this That thing, that thing, the alien, attacking the neighborhood,
starship troopers, and more, infusing these stories with horrific expressions, cruel humor, and splashes of violence and gore. While I had a lot of fun drawing this delightfully raunchy mess, my main concern was telling Cody’s story with a high level of believability and skill in bringing these fine people to life. I love the rich friendship the main characters share in this story. Their interactions were filled with a familiarity and love that I admired. Clay and his team share a similar dynamic to my own friend group. This tongue-in-cheek culture works because they have a deep foundation of trust and loyalty. The stakes of the Pine Cove Massacre are high because you care so much about Clay, Lola, Andy, and Kyle. Also, good luck finding a more worthy group of Space Worm Smashers.
