When Minecraft came out more than a decade ago, exploring the underground was scary but monotonous; lava and rare diamond blocks were the most exciting things. These days, however, going underground is a much more exciting experience. The caves are more diverse and interesting, and there are even buried ancient cities to loot – if you can avoid the Watchers.
There are dozens of biome types and subtypes above ground, but underground you’ll find fewer biomes and more dangers.
Note: This guide focuses on the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft, available for Windows 10, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile devices.
Dripping Stone Cave

Dripstone Cave, as its name suggests, is filled with dripstone stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites climbing up from the floor. Dripstone can be used in a variety of applications, such as self-replicating lava farms, and can be used as spikes to damage players and mobs. Relatively large amounts of copper are produced in dripstone caves.
lush cave

Lush caves are a great addition to Minecraft’s underworld. Minecraft’s caves have looked much the same for a long time – just stone with small chunks of desirable blocks scattered around, like iron ore and diamond. However, the lush caves are filled with plants. The ground is covered with moss patches, moss carpets, rhododendron bushes, grasses and flowers. From above, you can find glow berries – both are a type of fruit and Light source – There are also vines and spore flowers. Shallow pools will spawn dropleaf plants and sometimes newts.
deep darkness

Deep dark caves are where things get scary. These dark caves mainly generate in layers where stone turns into deep slate. You’ll find snorkel sensors and screamers, which summon the Warden. The Abyss is also where ancient cities spawned and is the source of magical golden apples and rare music records, among other treasures. No mobs spawn here except for Wardens, but Wardens can kill you almost instantly even if you’re fully armored in Netherite, so be careful when exploring this biome.
