I didn’t expect the show to advance in terms of romance over so many other aspects of life this season. I commented last week that the next stage in Rin and Eiji’s relationship would be for one of them to directly ask the other out on a date, but I didn’t expect that in the next episode! In this episode, most of the front tenses are more or less abandoned, it’s all there. These awkward teenagers act like awkward teenagers and are adorable.
The first half of the episode was admittedly slow, although it was nice to have more of the characters working in the acting department. Rin puts on a show and we see Eiji hard at work as part of the props department, but it’s not until the end of the festival that we realize it’s all set up for the final date, until we realize none of it happened Too many things. At first, I thought the show was going to label this outing a date, but then I realized it was just the characters trying to operate under their seemingly reasonable denial.
The final two minutes of the episode highlight that they have nothing left to hide. The feelings are there and they’re almost dating, but they’re just waiting for the right moment to make it clear. I liked the acting techniques used in this episode as a means of breaking up the awkward tension they felt after their confession. It makes me wonder if this will be the basis for the next episode? If so, then this could be one of the more thoughtful and narratively interesting uses of the show’s gimmick. What strikes me is that I really didn’t see this coming – and I mean that in the best way possible.
