As Stephen Colbert recently brought to our attention, there’s something strange about J.D. Vance’s laugh that sounds forced.
In the latest episode last week tonight John Oliver noticed this, too, playing a clip of Vance answering a reporter’s question about what makes him happy.
“Can we take a moment to talk about this laugh track? What the hell is that? It sounds weird, but have you ever encountered one of those laughs that you’ve only encountered in reading and never heard in conversation? “I really think that’s how J.D. Vance learned to laugh. He read about laughter in books or comics, saw it written phonetically, and understood it intellectually. The sound Archie made when the opportunity arose when someone asked him what made him happy, even though he had never tried the noise before. i got this and said ‘hahaha’ and immediately knew he had screwed up.
