If you liked Legs and thought Cuckoo looked solid, you’ll be happy to know that Neon will stay in the suspense and horror arena for the foreseeable. In January 2025, Presence from Stephen Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Magic Mike) will be unlike anything we’ve ever seen.
The tone is simple: this is the story of a supernatural entity…from the perspective of the supernatural entity. We’ve had experiments with this format, such as the Paranormal Activity series, but this type of horror story has never been told before (at least in a mainstream story) another This alone is enough to bring many horror fanatics and casual moviegoers into the theater. If you’re wondering who wrote it: It’s Jurassic Park’s David Koepp, a veteran collaborator with Steven Spielberg who also helped shape the next Jurassic World movie.

Earlier this year, we also had the opportunity to see The Nature of Violence, a horror film told from the perspective of a killer, in theaters. While it’s not super groundbreaking, it’s a welcome change of pace, so perhaps Presence can replicate this for the admittedly over-the-top “haunted house” sub-genre. There seems to be a demand for small twists on classic horror formulas lately, so these two could be the start of a larger movement to reinvent horror for a younger generation.
The first trailer for “Presence” isn’t even a minute long, but it already creates a melancholy atmosphere and lets casual viewers know that Soderbergh’s career is one of the wildest and most fascinating. . You can watch it here:

Shot in 2023, the film screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and received a 92% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. NEON quickly acquired distribution rights to the film and is trying to keep its impressive winning streak going into 2025. Directed by YouTube critic Chris Stuckmann, it should have people talking in the near future and has the support of horror guru Mike Flanagan.
The cast of “Presence” includes Lucy Liu, Julia Fox, Chris Sullivan, Karina Leung, Eddie Mady and Sim Mulholland. The film is scheduled to be released in select theaters in the United States on January 17, 2025, followed by a wide release on January 24, 2025. Stay tuned for international rollout plans in the coming months.
