For a franchise as firmly entrenched in audiences’ hearts as Yellowstone and The Dutton Family , you’d think it would be easier to make sense of the varying degrees of spin-offs and prequels.
It’s not.
Even with insiders subscribing to well-connected minds, things are getting messier by the day.
Rumors about Michelle Pfeiffer dating Sheridan have been circulating for some time. About a week ago, TV Line reported on another spinoff called Madison , starring Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell and Patrick J. Adams.
Today, Paramount officially announced the title. So, let’s break things down and see what we know and how we know it. Whether we can understand it in just over an hour is worth the experiment, right?

We all know this! It’s their grandson, which is confusing because it gave birth to all the others.
It’s grandfathered in a familial sense, but Beth Dutton and her brother Casey, along with their adopted brother Jamie, are far removed from the other Dutton characters we know.
Was Jamie really adopted, or was he just raised as a Dutton? It’s as clear as Yellowstone’s cosmic genealogy.
The story of Yellowstone hinges on what the Dutton family created after arriving in Montana in 1883.
The crux of the series is that John Dutton is working to stop anyone who wants to claim or reclaim Dutton’s land, whether under old Native American law or federal or state law, from writing or manipulating it. Get the job done.
John was a respected father, but one that was severely lacking among his children.
The Duttons’ relationship is not sensitive but is rooted in generational pride and a determination not to forget the commitments made to the land and each other. They have been made for over a century.
It’s beautiful, dramatic, soapy stuff that plays every string on our mood guitar.
For the disgusting reasons recounted elsewhere on this and other sites, Yellowstone will begin to grind to a halt this November.
While Sheridan’s script often surprises us, we’re being blinded, so these last few episodes will be a journey.
Yellowstone prequel
1883 (Completed)
This one is easy. 1883 is the first prequel to Yellowstone. It follows John Dutton’s ancestors, James and Margaret Dutton, and their children Elsa and John Sr.
The prequel stars Married stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton, and ends after a beautifully tragic season.
This isn’t a closed-ended story, though, as we learn the family’s fate through flashbacks to Yellowstone. These shows are both interconnected and difficult to navigate.
The show also stars Sam Elliott and LaMonica Garrett, whose characters travel north on a carriage train with the Dutton family and many others.
1923 (in production)
This 1883 sequel and prequel to Yellowstone continues the story of 1923 Montana.
James and Margaret both died, and their sons John Jr. and Spencer and John’s family lived in Monterey with their uncle Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife Carla (Helen Mirren). Dutton Estate, Canada.
Spencer and Jack are related to the Dutton lineage we know in Yellowstone.
Both are now married to strong, passionate women, and their love stories should be remembered for generations to come. I say probably because we had never heard of them in Yellowstone.
The Connective Tissue Flashbacks of Yellowstone that featured the 1883 story did not appear in 1923 .
The second season of 1923 will bring the chapter to a close. We don’t know when this chapter will continue.
1944 (under development)
We have no details about the next Yellowstone prequel and 1883 and 1923 sequels, 1944; however, it seems logical that it will involve the story of John Dutton’s father.
We briefly met him, played by Dabney Coleman, in Yellowstone Season 2 Episode 10.
As far as I know, we don’t have any further contact with him, even though John is a young man played by Josh Lucas.
We have no further information on timing, cast, or storyline.
yellowstone sequel
6666 (under development)
In Yellowstone Season 4, the story centers on Jimmy Hedstrom (Jefferson White), a ranch hand and owner of the Yellowstone brand.
When Jimmy fails to heed John’s advice, John sends him to a ranch in Texas to find himself. Sheridan became interested in the ranch when he purchased the actual ranch on which the 6666 was based, the Four Six Ranch.
The series description is as follows:
“Founded when the Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America embodies the history of the West more than the 6666 Ranch.
Still operating as it did two centuries ago, covering the entire county, 6666 is a place where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge, and the most dangerous thing a person does is the next thing…
timehe 6666 is synonymous with the ruthless effort to raise the best horses and livestock in the world, and is where the world’s best cowboys are born and raised.“
There haven’t been any discussions about the series in a while, so as far as we know, it’s still a work in progress.
Madison (previously used job title 2024)
This is where it gets confusing.
A modern offshoot of Yellowstone has long been talked about, but since it was first revealed around the time negotiations between Sheridan, Costner, and Paramount+ broke down, it was assumed to be a sequel.
Attached are the names Matthew McConaughey and Michelle Pfeiffer. However, this is not a continuation of the Dutton family’s Yellowstone, but a completely different story.
Paramount+ says the series is an honest study of grief and relationships among a New York City family in the Madison Valley of central Montana.
“Michelle Pfeiffer is an exceptional talent who brings emotional depth, emotional depth and emotional appeal to every role,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Worldwide Co-CEO and President/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios. Authenticity and elegance.
“She is the perfect anchor for this new chapter. yellowstone park universe, madisonfrom the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan.
The release made no mention of the Dutton family or the Star TV line reportedly attached.
Untitled Yellowstone Sequel
Obviously, there are still other Series coming soon will Starring Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser and Luke Grimes, the Dutton legend continues closure Lock the contract.
Maybe it’s just me, but this is the story that interests me the most.
Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler give their love story great names, while Kayce Dutton balances their passion for each other and life.
Before the press release for “Madison,” it seemed like “Madison” and “2024” were two different shows. The press release clarified this, noting that Madison had previously announced 2024.
Given the nature of the other prequels, we’re assuming 2024 will be some sort of offshoot of Darden. As such, we don’t know what this unnamed series might be called, or how it might be referenced. All we know is that sources are pretty sure it will happen.
Where does Matthew McConaughey fit in?
While McConaughey’s name was originally attached to one of the series, he might not be a good fit at all.
Parker News is closer to what’s going on here than any other source, and after Madison made the announcement, they effectively closed the door on him being involved in any way.
McConaughey may have been put off by the lengthy negotiation process and public feud between Sheridan and Costner. While many stars have found a home in Sheridan’s multiple projects, McConaughey is known for being laid back and introspective.
Maybe he didn’t think it was appropriate. Of course, this is purely speculation on my part.
I can’t think of anyone better to step into the Yellowstone saga than McConaughey, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for any potential news on that front.
Other Taylor Sheridan Series
Of course, none of this has anything to do with the countless other shows Sheridan now produces.
Among the shows already airing, we have The Mayor of Kingston, The Kings of Tulsa, and Spec Ops: Lioness.
Billy Bob Thornton’s Landman will premiere on Sunday, November 17, alongside Yellowstone Season 5b.
You can find past seasons of Yellowstone on Peacock and new episodes on Paramount Network. All other series air on Paramount+. If you’ve ever considered selling your soul for a quick buck, consider how much Paramount regrets selling the streaming rights to Peacock.
It might have been bad for their business, but it was great for us – it spawned an entire universe along with Sheridan.
The title of the article says it all. We’re trying to make sense of sequels and prequels, but it’s not easy.
