After The Rise of Skywalker (a supposed series killer that didn’t even kill the prospect of more sequels), J.J. Abrams may not be as popular in some quarters online, but he’s still a An efficient producer and filmmaker, he is ready to return to directing, although he has been clinging to the role of producer for some time. Now, we’re starting to find out who will join him.
Via Deadline, we’ve discovered that “Wednesday” and “Beetlejuice 2” star Jenna Ortega is joining “Twister” and “Top Gun: Maverick” star Glen Powell ) joins the cast, another name we’ve been hearing over and over again lately.

It’s no surprise that top acting talent wants to work with Abrams, who, in addition to successfully reviving the Mission: Impossible franchise and Super 8, also directed two Star Trek films ” and two “Star Wars” movies, not counting his many achievements in the “Mission: Impossible” series and “Super 8”. Like it or not, he’s still a big name in Hollywood, and up-and-coming stars like Ortega and Powell have nothing to lose by teaming up with him to (potentially) make a crowd-pleaser movie.
So, what is Abrams’ new movie really about? Some old rumors had him working on a time-travel-like movie, but Deadline nixed that idea. It’s also possible he’ll choose to focus on an adaptation of Stephen King’s Billy Summers novel; after all, Powell recently played a killer. But the truth is, everyone is just scrolling through Bad Robot’s recent public outings (of which there aren’t many) in an attempt to guess what the playful filmmaker is up to.
The casting of these two leads suggests that Warner Bros. and Bad Robot aren’t planning on going small or medium-sized with this project, but Abrams may be looking to return for something a little more ambitious in his first post-Star Wars drama. Something simple, perhaps to safely regain the trust of some broad audiences and critics. Then again, he’s known for his love of genre movies and nostalgic stories, so we wouldn’t be surprised if this is another homage to a beloved classic, or a secret new entry in an existing series. Stay tuned for more information, as this has to be one of the most talked about big screen Hollywood projects in the coming months.
