Destiny 2 got a new patch this week, and in addition to the usual balance changes, fans are excited about a “generous” buff to exotic item drop rates. According to Bungie, the chance of obtaining exotic items from chests found in Overthrow events has been adjusted. Higher level chests are supposed to increase drop rates, but feedback from the Destiny 2 community shows that drop rates actually decrease significantly.
Once a player completes the Dual Destiny Exotic mission for the first time, Exotic-type items will usually drop after about three overthrow runs. Depending on the roll, these can be extremely powerful pieces of armor if you build around them, but the two exotic perks available on them are random, so it will take grinding to get the combo you want.
Several Destiny 2 players have reported that at least five rounds of “overthrows” are required before exotic items drop, and Bungie has confirmed that it has “identified an issue affecting drop rates.”
We have discovered an issue affecting the drop rate of Exotic items.
Currently, level 4 overturning chests does not increase the drop chance, nor do they reward exotic items.— Destiny 2 Team (@Destiny2Team) August 7, 2024
This is a big blow to the Destiny 2 community, as these exotic farms became a big draw for the game after its release after completing the Final Form campaign. The issue comes amid a tumultuous period for Destiny 2 developer Bungie, which recently announced mass layoffs. It affected 17% of staff, with some of the high-profile departures including senior executives Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy, who were working on the canceled Destiny at the time The spin-off work “Project Payback”.
About 155 other Bungie developers will be absorbed into Sony Interactive Entertainment, and another group of employees will form a new studio under Sony’s umbrella. Bungie is also working on Marathon – a reboot of the ’90s Bungie IP – which the studio plans to release in 2025.
