Medical shows have always been popular with viewers; the same goes for most comedy series.
“Saint Denis Med,” a new comedy set to premiere in 2024, perfectly combines the two.
In the great tradition of shows like Superstore, this documentary-style show is sure to provide plenty of laughs. Here’s what we know so far.
What is St. Denis Healthcare?
“Saint Denis Med” is a new documentary sitcom launching on NBC in the fall of 2024.
The situation comedy is expected to be similar not only to “Superstore” in terms of humor, but also to “The Office.”
The show has received a fair amount of attention as medical and comedy shows usually have a strong appeal to viewers.
This is one of three new series NBC plans to launch in the fall of 2024.
The other two are “Brilliant Minds,” a medical drama starring “Star Wars'” Zachary Quinto, and “Happy’s Place,” a situation comedy starring Reba McEntire.
What is the background of St. Denis Medical Center?
St. Denis Medical Center is located in a hospital called St. Denis Medical Center.
According to NBC, the fictional hospital is located in Oregon, but we don’t know how much Oregon itself might be integrated into the plot.
Many other great shows are set in Oregon, including Grimm and Eureka, so it ties in nicely too.
TV shows should create stars, not rely on them
The hospital itself is said to be understaffed and underfunded.
These points are likely to feature heavily in plots and jokes.
Who founded St. Denis Medical?
St. Denis Medical Center is the brainchild of Justin Spitzer.
Justin also wrote the NBC hits “Superstore” and “American Auto.”
He’s teamed up with Eric Ledgin, which isn’t a first for the duo.
Lakin served as a writer and executive producer on “American Cars” and “Superstore” alongside Spitzer.
The fact that they’re a proven powerhouse duo in comedy production is exciting and bodes well for the show.
Who are the medical stars of St. Denis?
Wendi McLendon-Covey headlines the cast of St. Denis Medical .
She is known for her role as Beverly Goldberg on the long-running hit series The Goldbergs (2013-2023).
The Goldbergs: Here’s why the series finale lacks closure
Beverly Goldberg is that rare iconic and recognizable figure whose creations are like catching lightning in a bottle.
They say lightning never strikes the same place twice, but we hope it strikes the same star twice.
This means that Wendi Deng’s new character Joyce will be equally popular.
Another major comedy star you can see on St. Denis Medical is David Alan Grier.
Those who grew up in the 1990s know him best for his work on the sketch comedy show “In Living Color,” but he’s also played many other roles over the years.
The comedian, stage and screen star is also a talented voice actor.
He has previously voiced characters in animated shows such as The Proud Family and Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Greer will continue to be busy in 2024, starring as Roger in the film “American Magical Negroes” and playing a character named Ron in “St. Denis Medical.”
Notably, Josh Lawson also plays the title role.
The Australian-born actor is perhaps best known for his role as Doug Guggenheim in the TV series House of Lies.
Classic TV shows are perfect binge-watching for many reasons
Lawson appears in several episodes of The Librarians, which is being revived by The CW.
One of his well-known movie roles is as Kano in Mortal Kombat (2021).
Joining him in “St. Denis Med” are Kahyun Kim (“Cocaine Bears”), Mekki Leeper (“College Girls”) and Alison Tolman (“Fargo”).
What do we know about the key figures at St. Denis Healthcare?
So far, little is known about St. Denis Healthcare’s role.
Only their names and basic personality traits have been released.
McLendon-Covey plays Joyce, the hospital’s executive director.
She had big dreams for the hospital’s success and a no-nonsense approach.
Before serving as hospital director, she served as a surgical oncologist.
Grier plays an emergency room doctor.
His character Ron struggles to balance work and personal issues.
Why we need more documentary-style shows like The Office and Modern Family
NBC.com describes Ron as a man unlucky in love.
He’s a divorced doctor who can take advantage of karmic shifts, especially romantic karma.
Trauma surgeon Bruce (Lawson) is a confident, aggressive surgeon.
His description suggests he may be overly conceited, but that remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Serena and Matt (Kim and Leeper, respectively) are emergency room nurse practitioners.
As the series begins, it’s Matt’s first day.
Serena already works in the emergency room and is said to be passionate about homeopathy.

Nightclub: As flawed as great TV, as effective as comfort food
