Most conflicts occur in ring of power So far, our focus has been on Sauron’s machinations with his oldest enemy in Middle-earth, who plots the destruction of the Elven kingdom. But with his rise and return, we also see the rise of another major power on Arda: Numenor, and two very interesting characters who are ready to begin to face their destiny.
Of course, we’re talking about Elendil and Isildur. Played by Lloyd Owen and Maxime Baldry ring of powerThe father and son we met in season 1 are a far cry from the doomed king of men we met in Galadriel’s haunting prologue. Fellowship of the Ring. Elendil is a determined sailor and soldier who is favored by the regent Myriel (Cynthia Addai Robinson), while Isildur is his rebellious son eager to prove himself and explore beyond his homeland world, both men offer surprising differences in their more famous futures, with differences compounded as the season reaches its climax as the Númenóreans disastrously intervene in the battle for the South, leading to their schism.
But now separated, the two can slowly begin Season 2’s journey to become the ones who lead the Last Alliance to Mount Doom in the climax of the Second Age. For Elendil, this involves forging a stronger bond with Mirel, as she lost her sight after the Battle of the Southland and returned to Númenor to learn of her father’s death, which plunged the island into political turmoil. “Once she goes blind, Elendil has to be her eyes,” Owen tells Entertainment Weekly in a new cover story. “So he sees and tells, she interprets what he sees, and thus Elendil learns. This is the leader we must ultimately get him in training for.
Isildur’s heroic path is less noble, and certainly less charming. “I woke up in a cave and had to fight my way to safety, which was an inelegant way to start a season,” Baldry added. “This is a story about survival, but also a story about ‘be careful what you wish for.'” He grows from a boy to a man and must learn who to trust and who not to trust.
