Google has completed production of the Chromecast. Google said in a post on Tuesday that it would “end production of the Chromecast” after more than a decade selling the streaming dongle.
Although Chromecast units will now be available “while supplies last,” Google said it will continue to push software and security updates to its new devices, without specifying which ones. The latest update to the series is Chromecast with Google TV, released in 2022.
But now, Google says that “technology has evolved tremendously” since the original Chromecast was launched in 2013. ” Google wrote. “We’re further developing how streaming TV devices can add more features to your smart TV, built on the same Chromecast technology.”
The company will offer the new Google TV Streamer in place of the Chromecast, which will launch on September 24 for $99.99. The set-top box has some major improvements in specs compared to the Chromecast with Google TV, such as a 22% faster processor and Thread and Matter integration.
While the Google TV Streamer is a significant upgrade over the Chromecast and may even eventually rival the pricier Apple TV 4K, it’s a shame that Google is ditching its dongle. Chromecast with Google TV is priced at just $29.99 and provides entry-level access to an all-in-one streaming hub.
