If you’re not familiar with The Umbrella Academy, it’s the story of seven super-powered siblings brought together by an eccentric inventor created by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way. The story begins with a strange incident – the mother of 43 children did not seem to be pregnant before giving birth. Inventor Reginald Hargreaves set out to find as many children as possible, eventually adopting seven of them, turning them into the titular Umbrella Academy. After training their powers as children, the story picks up ten years after their disbandment and the unexpected death of Hargreeves.
It remains to be seen whether Netflix will adapt any existing spin-off comics or create an entirely new story within the Umbrella Academy universe. If Netflix does launch a spinoff, the streamer will also have to decide whether Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman will be involved. Blackman was recently accused of creating a toxic work environment. He has denied the accusations, which include accusations of bullying and making sexist comments.
