The team behind moana 2 Get ready to welcome audiences back to the powerful world of the protagonist and her fellow islanders.

During a press conference at Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California, the filmmakers debuted the first 30 minutes of the sequel to the 2016 animated feature. After screening the footage, co-directors David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, as well as co-writers Jared Bush (the new chief creative officer of Disney Animation) took the stage to preview the new adventure of “Moana” in three years.

Released November 27, Disney moana 2 The film will feature new original songs written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bell, with the first 30 minutes of the film including the title character’s opening musical number, which was also screened at the Annecy Animation Festival. Re-interpretation of the voice-over characters from the original work Moana Auli’i Cravalho plays the title character and Dwayne Johnson plays the demigod Maui.

“The opening song is really the warmest welcome back to the world of Moana,” Hand explains. “We really wanted to capture that energy. Obviously the sound of the music is reminiscent of the first movie, but also gives us a sense of where Moana’s life is now and where her island is.

The story of the sequel mainly tells the story of Moana responding to the call of her ancestors, gathering a small crew, and embarking on a dangerous ocean voyage to find a mysterious island. A later scene was also shown, showing Moana and her friends taking on the dangerous but diminutive Kakamorra tribe.

“We really think a lot about what it means to grow as a leader,” Ledoux Miller said. “When you mature, you learn that your actions have consequences. The things you do, the choices you make affect the people around you, and we really wanted Moana to go through her paces as a leader. , and got to see what she looks like on the water when she has company.

That said, there’s also time for play during the trip. “We wanted to have fun, and what could be more fun than a group of people who don’t know how to be at sea and have to face the biggest test possible?” LeDoux Miller added.

The project was originally planned as a Disney+ streaming series until Disney CEO Bob Iger announced moana 2 Instead, it evolved into a feature-length film. The team discusses how the project has changed over the course of its theatrical release.

“The main core characters and themes are the themes we set for the series,” says Derek. “But then we had to resize it in a very dramatic way to make sure it could serve the feature format. So there were things that didn’t quite fit with the series and the feature. But for me, one of the things that I loved It’s all coming together through Moana and her personal growth.

Bush agreed, adding: “All of us feel like this is an incredible opportunity to tell this story on an epic scale, in a world where Moanaexactly what you want. The series version also has an epic quality to it, but knowing that this version is going to be on the biggest screen in the world really allows us to go all out.

The film’s team first released the latest trailer at D23 in August, which features Carvalho and Johnson participating in a musical performance. Previously, Disney had shared moana 2 Footage and behind-the-scenes footage from June’s lecture in Annecy.

“Maui started singing again — singing to a key that didn’t exist,” Johnson told the D23 crowd. “My hair looks great moana 2“.

Also returns from the original Moana The voice cast includes Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger and Alan Tudyk. Christina Chen and Yvette Merino executive produce.
