For more than a decade, Grand Theft Auto Online players have been largely free to explore Los Santos. Not all locations in GTA V are open yet, but Rockstar Games has revealed that there are plans to reopen fan-requested areas as part of the upcoming Zombies mode.
Rockstar announced in this week’s patch notes that North Yankton will be featured in “Community Challenges, sending forth a marching horde of the undead in a new limited-time mode.” This snowy landscape is the centerpiece of Grand Theft Auto V’s prologue, where Michael and Trevor run into some serious problems as they try to rob a bank and get away with it. GTA Online players were previously only able to return there through glitches and exploits.
While Rockstar has yet to share full details about GTA Online’s Zombies mode, GamesRadar noted that data miners have “uncovered evidence of a wave-based survival mode,” suggesting it will be a horde-style campaign. However, there’s no word yet on whether Operation Zombie is limited to North Yankton or if it will spread to the larger areas of San Andreas and Los Santos. Additionally, Rockstar has announced a slew of Halloween-related items for GTA+ members, including the scary-looking HVY Nightshark SUV and Demonic Motorcycle gear.
With Grand Theft Auto 6 set to release in 2025, it’s likely that GTA Online as we know it will undergo major revisions in the future. But Rockstar has managed to keep the game’s world feeling fresh for a long time, and players aren’t ready to give it up just yet.
