The 10th annual Her Universe Fashion Show kicks off with a powerful slow-paced performance at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 Katy Perry’s “Roar” by Michael James Scott.
It’s a perfect demo for the show to come. It’s a gorgeous display of talent that runs out of steam at times. Just as Scott sometimes struggled to stick to the songs’ slower pace, the show also had some gags that felt a bit meandering.
Her Universe isn’t the only brand celebrating an anniversary. The show is sponsored by Mattel, which has three birthdays to remember: Mattel’s 80th, Barbie’s 65th and Polly Pocket’s 35th. In true “Her Universe” style, all three featured jumpsuits. The first, of course, is Barbie, which uses state-of-the-art projection technology.
founder of her universe Ashley Eckstein Barbie wears a dress transformed by lights and projections, including a new look for Barbie’s 65th anniversary, culminating in a long, pink, sparkly dress with a large bow revealed. Unfortunately, the dress was impractical and she tripped several times until Scott started to help her.
This was followed by a video in which several past honorees discussed what Her Universe means to them and how powerful and passionate the community is, before many of them took to the runway in new looks. Of all the great pieces, my personal favorite is the Cheshire Cat look.
After the current designers showed off their creations, Scott and Eckstein returned to the stage to have fun with vintage Barbie and Ken styling and talking. There are a lot of people to thank, including a member of Eckstein’s team who dressed up as Ken and whom many viewers have been going crazy for. It probably doesn’t hurt that he looks the part Ryan Gosling.
Then, it was finally game time. Between the two sets of contestants, Eckstein and Scott stood out with different looks, including Eckstein’s Polly Pocket dress (which unfortunately malfunctioned) and Scott’s Hot Wheels look.
However, the talent on display was undeniable and the audience’s choice winner Candice Miller Her Warrior Princess wowed everyone with its incredible texture details dune look. Her use of materials shows a true mastery of the art of fabrics. At the same time, the winner selected by the judges, Wes Jenkinsmagically creating the complete look of a Barbie outfit.

The Her Universe 10th anniversary fashion show once again demonstrated the powerful creativity of geeks and the potential beauty of the fan base. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
